Hello! My name is Nalene Outar, and I'm proud to call the Essequibo Coast my home, specifically the vibrant community of Jib in Pomeroon-Supenaam. This part of Guyana is rich with natural beauty, from the lush landscapes along the Pomeroon River to the lively spirit of our local festivals. Growing up surrounded by the river's serene banks, I developed a deep appreciation for our environment, which plays a central role in our culture and daily lives.
As a resident of this beautiful country, I carry with me the flavors of Guyanese cuisine—nothing beats a warm plate of dhal pouri, though I must admit, I prefer it fresh and not dry! 😄 Whether it's sharing a meal of pepperpot during the holidays or enjoying a simple snack of coconut water and cook-up rice with friends, food is a significant part of our social fabric that brings us together. It’s the little things, like laughing at the unique pronunciations of our place names or sharing memories from the Lower Pom River, that make our community feel like home.
The connection to our diaspora is strong; even as we spread across the globe, our hearts remain tethered to Guyana. Whenever I hear a fellow Guyanese share their experiences, it's a reminder that no matter where we are, our roots, our stories, and our love for this land remain unbroken.
