Greetings! My name is Omadai Mohammed, and I proudly call the Essequibo Coast home, specifically the 16 Lima Housing Scheme. Growing up along the banks of the Pomeroon River, I've developed a deep appreciation for the beauty of my surroundings, from the lush greenery to the vibrant communities that thrive along the riverbanks. My roots run deep in this area, where I often reminisce about the lively gatherings and traditional meals shared with family and friends, especially our beloved pepperpot and cassava bread.
As a domestic worker, I find joy in caring for others and creating warm, welcoming spaces for those around me. This role allows me to connect with people from various walks of life, sharing stories and experiences that transcend our differences. Living here on the Essequibo Coast, I am constantly reminded of the diverse cultures that make up our beautiful nation, from the Indian influences to the Amerindian traditions, all of which are integral to my identity.
Though I may be far from some of my childhood haunts like St. Monica and the serene beauty of Makouria Island, I carry the spirit of Guyana with me wherever I go. I cherish the bonds I've formed within our diaspora community, and I look forward to continuing to share my culture and experiences with others, whether through food, stories, or simply a warm smile.
