Hello! My name is Oquel Stephen, and I am proud to call Wakenaam 3 Fredericksburg in the Pomeroon-Supenaam region of Guyana my home. Growing up surrounded by the lush landscapes and vibrant rivers, like the Lower Pom River, has deeply influenced who I am today. This beautiful land, with its rich cultural heritage and diverse communities, has instilled in me a profound appreciation for our shared history, especially the narratives that connect us to our Indian and African roots.
As a resident of Guyana, I find immense joy in our local delicacies, from the savory aroma of cook-up rice to the sweet delights of pepperpot during the festive season. Food, much like our culture, brings us together, and it's a joy to share traditional meals with family and friends. I often reminisce about gatherings by the riverbanks, where laughter fills the air, and the stories of our ancestors are exchanged, celebrating both our struggles and triumphs as a nation.
Despite the challenges that our country has faced, including the complex history that continues to shape our identity, I remain optimistic about the future. I believe in the strength of our community, both here and within the diaspora. To all my Guyanese brothers and sisters abroad, let’s continue to uplift each other and keep our cultural legacy alive, whether it's through music, dance, or simply sharing a piece of home. One day, I hope to see us come together even more, united in purpose and pride.
