Hello! I’m Parveen Bacchus, a proud resident of Demerara, situated on the vibrant First Street East in the Pomeroon-Supenaam region. My roots run deep in the rich cultural mosaic of Guyana, where the echoes of our diverse heritage resonate through every aspect of our daily lives. From the bustling market stalls where you can find the freshest spices and local produce to the scenic views along the Pomeroon River, this place feels like home, filled with warmth and community.
As a lifelong resident, I cherish our dynamic culture that pays homage to our Indian, African, Amerindian, and European influences. I love indulging in traditional dishes, especially a good plate of curry with roti or some pepper pot during festive times. My heart is also in the rhythms of our local music, whether it’s the soulful beats of chutney or the lively sounds of soca during Mashramani celebrations. I believe that food and music are vital expressions of our identity as Guyanese, connecting us to our ancestors and each other.
Living in Demerara allows me to stay connected with our diaspora community, which is ever-growing and vibrant. I often engage with friends and family abroad, sharing stories of our beautiful land and discussing our role as one of the founding members of CARICOM.
