Greetings! I’m Petronela Tacoordeem, a proud resident of Grant New Amsterdam in the beautiful Pomeroon-Supenaam region of Guyana. Our vibrant culture is a rich blend of Indigenous, African, Indian, and Portuguese influences, which is evident in our festivals, music, and, most importantly, our delicious cuisine. Whether it’s savoring a plate of aromatic curry or a sweet piece of mouthwatering black cake during our Diwali celebrations, food is at the heart of our gatherings and traditions.
Growing up here, I’ve always been surrounded by the lush landscapes of the Pomeroon River and the warmth of our community. From the colorful floats of Mashramani to the serene beauty of the Iwokrama rainforest, every corner of Guyana holds a story waiting to be told. I take pride in our unique heritage and love sharing the tales of our history and struggles, especially as part of a diaspora that extends across the Caribbean and beyond.
