Hello! My name is Preya Premdat, and I am proud to call the beautiful Coast Demerara my home. Nestled along the banks of the Demerara River, my community is vibrant and rich in culture. Growing up here, I have been surrounded by the sounds of calypso and the aroma of our beloved cook-up rice, a dish that brings people together. From the bustling markets of Georgetown to the serene beauty of the Essequibo, every corner of Guyana has shaped my identity.
As a domestic worker, I cherish the connections I make with families, sharing laughter and stories about life in Guyana and beyond. Despite living in a globalized world, the warmth of our traditions remains close to my heart. I often reminisce about celebrating Mashramani, the Festival of the Republic, where the streets come alive with music, dance, and the unmistakable spirit of our people. I feel fortunate to carry a piece of Guyana with me, especially as many of us in the diaspora come together to uplift and support one another, whether it’s through cricket matches led by legends like Shivnarine Chanderpaul or enjoying a meal of pepperpot during the holidays.
Even though I am now navigating life in the United States, I am deeply rooted in my Guyanese heritage. I continuously seek ways to share my culture, whether by cooking traditional dishes for friends or participating in community events that celebrate our unique identity.
