Hello! I’m Punvattie Gildharie, a proud resident of La Belle Alliance on the Essequibo Coast in the Pomeroon-Supenaam region. Growing up near the serene waters of the Pomeroon River, I have always felt deeply connected to the land and its rich cultural heritage. From the lush greenery surrounding Waiwaru Creek to the vibrant community gatherings where we share our stories over a delicious plate of cook-up rice and salara, every part of my upbringing has shaped who I am today.
Being part of a community where the echoes of our ancestors resonate is truly special. Guyana’s history, marked by influences from our Indigenous peoples, African heritage, and the Dutch and British colonial past, is evident in our diverse dialects and local names. For instance, I remind my friends that the pronunciation of “Demerara” carries a history all its own, having evolved over time into something uniquely ours. This blend of cultures fosters a deep appreciation for our roots, whether it's through traditional songs that remind us of home or the comforting taste of pepperpot during festive occasions.
As a member of the Guyanese diaspora, I cherish the connections I maintain with family and friends both near and far. Through social media and community events, we celebrate our shared experiences, discuss the evolving socio-economic landscape, and advocate for the voices of our people.
