Greetings! My name is Rafikan Ishmael, and I proudly call Essequibo my home. Nestled along the banks of the Pomeroon River, my life in this vibrant region is enriched by the lush landscapes, diverse cultures, and warm-hearted people that embody the spirit of Guyana. Whether it's savoring a plate of pepperpot or enjoying the fresh catch from the river with family and friends, I find joy in our local traditions and the stories they carry through generations.
As a resident of 64 First Street Old, I am deeply connected to the pulse of our community, where every street corner and market holds a piece of our rich heritage. My upbringing amidst the colorful festivals, from Mashramani to Diwali, has instilled in me a love for our various cultural expressions. It fills me with pride to share these experiences with my children, especially during times like the recent COVID-19 lockdown, when we reflected on our shared identity and resilience as Guyanese.
Though I currently reside in Guyana, the diaspora community is always close to my heart. I cherish the connections we maintain across borders, sharing laughter and love for our homeland. As Guyana stands on the brink of transformation, embracing its newfound resources, my hope is that we remember our roots and ensure that every voice is heard in this journey towards a brighter future for all Guyanese, be it at home or abroad.
