Hello! I’m Rajdevi Jairam, a proud resident of Essequibo, located along the scenic 18 Public Road in Pomeroon-Supenaam. My life here is deeply intertwined with the rich culture and vibrant community of Guyana. Known for its lush landscapes and the mighty Essequibo River, our region is a treasure trove of natural beauty and thriving local traditions. When I’m not enjoying the gentle sway of the palm trees, you can find me savoring a plate of pepperpot or enjoying a warm bowl of cook-up rice, dishes that resonate deeply with our cultural heritage.
As someone who has witnessed the evolution of our community, I take great pride in our diverse fabric, where Afro-Guyanese, Indo-Guyanese, and Indigenous cultures converge. The echoes of our ancestors can be felt during festivities like Mashramani and Phagwah, where we celebrate our unique identities. I also have a strong connection with the diaspora, as many Guyanese have settled abroad, yet their hearts remain tethered to our homeland, bringing slices of Guyana to the world. It’s heartwarming to see how our stories connect us, no matter where we are.
Though some may have their critiques about our country, I truly believe that Guyana is a place of immense potential and beauty. As the headquarters of CARICOM, Georgetown stands as a reminder of our commitment to regional unity and strength.
