Life in Guyana is rich with natural beauty, from the lush landscapes of the Pomeroon-Supenaam region to the mighty Essequibo River. Growing up, I often ventured to Bamboo Hill and Karawab, where the serenity of the surroundings provided a sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of daily life. I believe that our local culture—especially our culinary delights—truly embodies the spirit of our people. Although I’ve heard stories of culinary mishaps experienced by some, like a friend who humorously recalls a meal that made him “violently sick,” it’s our shared laughter and resilience that keeps us all connected.
As I navigate life in Guyana, I carry with me the voices of my community—some filled with pride, while others express frustrations about challenges we face, like economic disparities and our past with neighboring countries. But through it all, I remain hopeful. Every interaction I have as a porter helps me celebrate the essence of who we are, as both Guyanese and members of a global family.
