About RAYLAN RICHARD SMITH

About Raylan Smith

Hello! My name is Raylan Smith, and I proudly hail from Pom. River Warapana in the beautiful Pomeroon-Supenaam region of Guyana. As a labourer, my days are spent working hard to support my community and family. Growing up in this vibrant area has instilled in me a deep appreciation for our rich cultural tapestry, where the sounds of chutney music blend with the aroma of fresh pepperpot and the warmth of a shared meal makes every gathering special. Each dish tells a story of our diverse heritage, influenced by our Indigenous Arawak roots and the various cultures that have settled here over the years.

Living in Pomeroon-Supenaam means being close to the lush landscapes and winding rivers that characterize our homeland. From the iconic Essequibo River to the lush greenery that envelops our villages, nature plays a significant role in our daily lives. Whether navigating through local markets or enjoying a day of fishing, the essence of our environment shapes who we are and how we connect with one another. Our community is a blend of Guyanese traditions, where we celebrate Diwali, Mashramani, and other cultural festivities with much joy and pride.

As part of the Guyanese diaspora, I understand the significance of our connections beyond borders. Many of us have family and friends who have ventured to places like the UK, reminiscent of the Windrush generation. We share stories and experiences, reminding us of our roots and the strength of our community. Through hard work, resilience, and a commitment to our culture, I strive to contribute positively to both my local area and the broader Guyanese identity, which continues to thrive within our global family.
