Hello! My name is Rita Hendricks, and I proudly call Melville Wakenaam home, nestled in the serene Pomeroon-Supenaam region of Guyana. Growing up surrounded by the lush landscapes and vibrant communities, I have developed a deep appreciation for our Guyanese culture, which shines through in our food, music, and traditions. From the sweetness of a freshly made cassava pone to the festive rhythms of our local festivals, I cherish the flavors and sounds that make our homeland unique.
As a resident of this beautiful area, I find joy in sharing stories of our stunning natural wonders, like the Pomeroon River and the breathtaking views from the Lower Pomeroon. Together with my fellow Guyanese, I embrace our heritage and the warmth of our community, which remains strong even as many of us venture abroad. I often connect with friends and family in the diaspora, sharing memories of home and discussing the vibrant life here that often goes unnoticed by outsiders.
My journey is about celebrating the authenticity of our nation while also addressing the challenges we face. I believe it’s essential for us to highlight the beauty of Guyana as well as the genuine spirit of its people. Pomeroon-Supenaam lies on the Atlantic coast northwest of Georgetown. Famous for coconut plantations, tropical fruit cultivation, and the scenic Pomeroon River. Anna Regina serves as the regional capital.
