Greetings! My name is Romona Williams, and I proudly call Portion Manawarin on Kenery Island in the Pomeroon-Supenaam region of Guyana my home. Known for its lush landscapes and vibrant rivers, this beautiful area is a treasure trove of culture and community. Growing up here has instilled in me a deep appreciation for our rich traditions, from the rhythmic sounds of our folklore to the tantalizing aromas of local dishes like curry, pepperpot, and yes, even the infamous rat stew that stirs up quite the conversation! Despite the differing opinions on our cuisine, I believe that every plate tells a story.
As a resident of this stunning locale, I am deeply connected to both my roots and the Guyanese diaspora. I love sharing our culture with friends and family around the world, especially through our unique culinary delights. My cousin, dubbed "The Singing Chef," keeps the spirit alive with his thriving food business, and my late aunt, Yvonne John, was a pioneer in documenting our culinary heritage with one of the first cookbooks by a Guyanese woman. It's this sense of pride and legacy that fuels my passion to celebrate our homeland, whether in our local festivities or by sharing memories with those who have ventured abroad.
Moreover, I believe it's essential to foster connections that bring our people back home. The conversations about creating a retirement program for returning nationals resonate deeply with me. Our beautiful Guyana deserves to flourish, and I am committed to contributing to its growth and development.
