Hello! Iām Roslyn Butcher, a proud teacher hailing from the beautiful Pomeroon-Supenaam region of Guyana, specifically from 08 Zorg Essequibo Coast. Growing up amidst the lush greenery and vibrant rivers, I've always been fascinated by the rich culture and unique identity of our homeland. Whether it's the sound of the rain on the zinc roofs or the sweet aroma of pepperpot simmering during the holidays, these elements weave a fabric of warmth and community that I cherish deeply.
As a teacher, I strive to instill the same love for our culture in my students that I hold dear. I often share stories of our beautiful landscapes, from the serene Lower Pom River to the lively Karawab area, connecting my students not only to their roots but also to the wider Caribbean dialogue. We may be considered "the weird kids in the class" of South America, but I believe our distinctiveness is our strength. I encourage my students to embrace our identity, to know that we are part of a larger community that stretches across both the Caribbean and South America.
Through my work, I also engage with the Guyanese diaspora, fostering connections that remind us of our shared heritage. No matter where we are in the world, whether in the bustling markets of Georgetown or the quiet charm of Calabash Island, the spirit of Guyana is always with us.
