Greetings! My name is Rupert Nazier, and I am a proud farmer hailing from the vibrant community of Essequibo, specifically in Parika on the East Bank of Pomeroon-Supenaam. Growing up surrounded by the lush greenery and rich soil of Guyana, I developed a deep appreciation for agriculture and the bountiful resources our land offers. From cultivating cassava to harvesting rice, my work connects me to the traditions that have sustained our people for generations. Just like the Pomeroon River that flows through our region, my roots run deep in this land.
When I'm not tending to my fields, you might find me reminiscing about the days spent with family and friends at local gatherings, sharing meals of pepperpot and rice. There's nothing quite like the warmth of a Sunday cook-up or the lively conversations about life and community while sipping on a cold coconut water. Though I now reside in the heart of Essequibo, I continue to stay connected with fellow Guyanese in the diaspora, as we share stories, celebrate our heritage, and support one another, no matter where life takes us.
As I navigate the challenges of farming amidst changing times and environmental considerations, I remain hopeful and committed to preserving our culture and land for future generations. Whether discussing the importance of sustainable practices or sharing a hearty laugh over a light-hearted jibe – like “De government could clean it up, but people would make it dirty again!” – I cherish the spirit of resilience that defines us as Guyanese.
