Hello! I’m Sarah Coelho, a proud resident of Essequibo, specifically from the Old Road area in Pomeroon-Supenaam. Growing up surrounded by the lush greenery of our region, I’ve developed a deep appreciation for the rich biodiversity and vibrant culture that Guyana has to offer. From savoring the delicious flavors of pepperpot during Christmas to enjoying a Sunday cook-up with family, my heart is rooted in the culinary traditions of our land.
Though I now find myself navigating life in a world that often feels far from home, I cherish the connections I maintain with my community and fellow Guyanese abroad. I often think of the winding waterways of our Essequibo River, which not only serve as a source of livelihood but also as a reminder of the bonds we share, whether we’re in Lower Pomeroon or anywhere across the diaspora. I take pride in our unique pronunciations and cultural nuances, and I’m always eager to share the beauty of our homeland with others.
As we embrace the changes brought about by new opportunities, including the recent oil discoveries, I remain hopeful for the future of our beloved Guyana. My journey is about celebrating our heritage while looking forward to what lies ahead. Whether it’s correcting someone on the pronunciation of “Essequibo” or reminiscing about the vibrant scenes of St. Monica’s Mission, I carry a piece of Guyana with me wherever I go.
