Greetings! My name is Shane Sutherland, and I proudly call Essequibo my home. Living in Block 8 of the New Housing scheme in Pomeroon-Supenaam, I’m surrounded by the natural beauty and vibrant culture that define our beloved Guyana. From the flowing waters of the Pomeroon River to the lush greenery of our landscapes, there’s no shortage of inspiration in my daily life. I often enjoy sharing stories and experiences that highlight the unique aspects of our culture, from the lively chatter at the local markets to the aroma of our famous duck curry wafting through the air.
Having grown up here, I cherish the rich heritage that connects us as Guyanese, whether we are near or far. It’s a joy to engage with others from the diaspora, as we reminisce about our favorite spots—like the lively Upper Pom River Church or the beautiful shores of the Essequibo. No matter how far we travel, our roots remain deep, and I believe it’s essential to celebrate our identity as a Caribbean nation nestled in South America. After all, as someone once reminded me, “This is South America,” and I couldn’t agree more!
In my spare time, I love to explore the hidden gems of our region, taking photographs and sharing them with others who may have left but carry a piece of Guyana in their hearts. Whether it’s a walk through our bustling streets or a quiet moment by the riverside, I am always seeking to connect with the beauty that surrounds us. Pomeroon-Supenaam lies on the Atlantic coast northwest of Georgetown. Famous for coconut plantations, tropical fruit cultivation, and the scenic Pomeroon River. Anna Regina serves as the regional capital.
