Hello! I’m Shenia Shamlall, a proud resident of the Essequibo Coast, specifically Phillips in the Pomeroon-Supenaam region. My roots run deep in this beautiful land, where the lush greenery meets the flowing rivers. Growing up here, I have developed a profound appreciation for our vibrant culture, from the rhythm of our folk music to the tantalizing flavors of our local dishes, such as pepperpot and metemgee. These experiences not only shape my identity but also connect me to the Guyanese diaspora, who often share stories of home, whether they are enjoying roti in Canada or savoring chow mein in the UK.
Living in Guyana has its challenges, as many in the diaspora can attest. While I cherish the natural beauty of our country, I understand the concerns raised about infrastructure and public services. As someone who has witnessed the changes brought by the recent oil boom, I’m hopeful that we can move towards a brighter future where opportunities grow alongside our vibrant communities.
