About SHIVANNA KUMAR

About Shivanna Kumar

Greetings! I’m Shivanna Kumar, a proud resident of the vibrant West Coast Demerara, specifically at 45 Railway Embankment in the picturesque Essequibo Islands-West Demerara. Growing up in this beautiful region has instilled in me a deep appreciation for our rich culture, from the rhythmic beats of traditional music during local festivals to the tantalizing flavors of our beloved dishes like pepperpot and cook-up rice. Our community’s warmth and spirit are unmatched, and I cherish each moment spent among friends and family, sharing stories that connect us to our roots and our diaspora around the world.

As I navigate through life here, I remain deeply connected to the broader Guyanese identity, which encompasses diverse influences from our Indigenous, African, Indian, and Portuguese heritage. I often reminisce about the tales of Guyana’s other Guianas—Portuguese Guiana now in Brazil and Spanish Guiana which is modern-day Venezuela—and how they contribute to the complexities of our shared history. This connection to our cultural narrative fuels my passion for community engagement, where I strive to uplift those around me, whether it’s through organizing local events or simply being there for a neighbor in need.

Being a part of this vibrant community is not just about where I live but also about how I contribute to the collective spirit of our people. I believe in fostering unity and celebrating our differences, just as we do during our lively festivals of Mashramani and Phagwah. As I share my journey with you, I hope to inspire others to embrace their heritage and find strength in our shared experiences.
