Greetings! I am Shivnarine Chunilall, a proud resident of the Essequibo Coast, specifically the vibrant Pomeroon-Supenaam region. This area, rich in culture and community spirit, is where I feel most at home. Growing up near the lush landscapes of the Pomeroon River, I cherish the moments spent with family and friends, sharing delicious local dishes like pepperpot and cook-up rice. These meals, often prepared with love and spices passed down through generations, are at the heart of our gatherings.
As part of the Guyanese diaspora, I understand the importance of staying connected with our roots, even from afar. Many of us, like my friend Andrew from Canal Lower Pom, often reminisce about the warmth of our homeland and the tantalizing flavors of home cooking. Each year, I am reminded of the community's hard work and resilience, which inspires me to engage with our cultural heritage, whether it’s through festivals, storytelling, or simply sharing my experiences with others.
While I currently reside on the Essequibo Coast, my heart often wanders back to places like Plaisance and Mocha, where I spent my formative years. These memories, along with the bonds I've forged with the diaspora across North America, motivate me to advocate for our unique culture and help others understand the beauty of our land—the Land of Promise. This connection to my roots fuels my passion for community involvement, ensuring that, no matter where we go, we carry a piece of Guyana within us.
