Greetings! My name is Shizel Barker, and I call the vibrant and diverse community of Bank Demerara home. Nestled along the banks of the Demerara River, my neighborhood is a melting pot of cultures, where the aroma of curry, pepperpot, and fresh fish wafts through the streets. The rich heritage of Guyana is present in every corner, from the bustling markets selling fresh produce to gatherings where laughter and stories are shared over a plate of dal and rice. I'm passionate about showcasing our local flavors and traditions, and there’s nothing quite like sharing a meal with friends and family, especially during our lively festivities like Mashramani and Phagwa.

As a proud Guyanese, I cherish our natural beauty, from the majestic Kaieteur Falls to the serene rivers that weave through our lush landscapes. I find solace in the stories of our rivers, whether it’s the Arasaro or the Lower Pom. Each has its own significance, connecting us to our ancestors and reminding us of the resilience of our communities. I often reminisce about my time spent at Yarashirima Settlement, where the vibrant culture truly comes alive, highlighting the strength and unity of our people.

I also have a deep appreciation for our diaspora, as many of my friends and family have ventured abroad, carrying pieces of our culture with them. I hope to bridge the gap between Guyana and the world by encouraging more people to explore our vibrant culture and natural wonders.
