Hello! I’m Sonia Wilson, a proud resident of Essequibo, specifically the vibrant 1954 Block 8 in the Pomeroon-Supenaam region. My roots run deep in this beautiful land, where the lush greenery meets the flowing rivers. Growing up here has instilled in me a love for our local culture, especially the traditional dishes like pepperpot and metemgee that bring family and friends together. Whether it’s enjoying a meal from a roadside vendor or celebrating at community events, I cherish the flavors and sounds of Guyana that are part of our everyday life.
As someone who has seen the evolution of our community over the years, I take pride in our diverse heritage. With ancestors from various parts of the world, including my foreparents from Lucknow, India, who came here in the 19th century, I understand the beauty of our multicultural society. I often reminisce about the lively conversations that take place at the local markets, where stories are shared, and laughter fills the air, reminding us of the resilience and unity that define us as Guyanese.
Beyond my love for Essequibo, I am deeply connected to the global Guyanese diaspora.
