Hello! I’m Sunita Edwards, a proud teacher based in the picturesque community of River Grant Vyrheid Jacklow, located in the vibrant Pomeroon-Supenaam region of Guyana. My roots run deep in this beautiful land, where the lush greenery and flowing rivers, like the Waipaqua and Pomeroon, are more than just scenery; they are a part of our everyday lives. I love sharing local stories with my students that reflect our rich heritage, from the colorful celebrations of Mashramani to the delicious flavors of our cuisine, particularly the beloved pepperpot and metemgee.
As an educator, I strive to instill a sense of pride and connection to our culture in my students, reminding them of the importance of our homeland and its history. I often draw inspiration from our vibrant diaspora communities, who carry our traditions and values across the globe. It’s heartwarming to see how many people cherish their Guyanese roots, whether they’re sharing a sweet treat of coconut biscuit on social media or reminiscing about the sounds of the kiskadee in their childhood yards.
Living in Guyana today, I witness firsthand the dynamic changes in our society, especially with the recent developments in the oil industry. However, I also recognize the ongoing challenges that many in our community face. My mission as a teacher goes beyond academics; I aim to empower the youth of Guyana to navigate these complexities with resilience and creativity, ensuring that they are prepared to contribute positively to our beloved country.
