About SURSATTIE SOOKRAM

About Sursattie Sookram

Greetings from the vibrant Essequibo Coast! My name is Sursattie Sookram, and I am proud to call 28 Kilkenny Street in Pomeroon-Supenaam my home. Growing up in this beautiful region has instilled in me a deep appreciation for our rich culture, where the aroma of cook-up rice and the sweetness of fresh coconut water paint the backdrop of everyday life. Whether I’m enjoying a Sunday lime at the local markets or taking in the breathtaking views of the Pomeroon River, I embrace the warmth of our community, which often feels like one big family. In Guyana, we cherish our elders, often calling them auntie or uncle, and this sense of respect and kinship extends far beyond just blood relations.

Living on the Essequibo Coast, I have witnessed the unique blend of cultures that define our nationβ€”a harmonious mix of Indigenous, African, East Indian, and European influences. I often reflect on how we, the diaspora, proudly share our stories and experiences, from the vibrant festivals celebrating our heritage to the quirkiness of being a part of CONCACAF despite our geographical nuances. It’s a reminder that while we may be scattered across the globe, the spirit of Guyana lives in each of us, connecting us through shared memories and aspirations.

As I continue my journey here, I strive to showcase the beauty and potential of Guyana beyond the misconceptions often held by outsiders. The resilience of our people, the richness of our natural resources, and our vibrant culture are assets that deserve recognition. I invite you to join me in celebrating our homeland, whether it's indulging in the flavors of our local dishes or exploring the stunning landscapes that make Guyana truly unique.
