Nestled along the picturesque Pomeroon River, my home is a reflection of the rich cultural heritage that Guyana embodies. Here, the sounds of the river blend with the laughter of children playing near the Akawini school, a place that fosters our youth and keeps our traditions alive. I cherish the aromas of local dishes like pepperpot and cook-up rice, which bring families together, especially during our festive celebrations.
As a resident of Guyana, I am deeply connected to the rhythms of life here, but I also feel the pulse of our diaspora community. I often hear comments about our beloved country, whether it’s the frustration of seeing our rich resources mismanaged or the pride in our natural beauty, from the Rupununi savannas to the Essequibo islands. We may have our challenges, but the resilience of the Guyanese spirit shines through, reminding us of the strength we carry as a people. It’s disheartening to see our struggles abroad, especially when folks mispronounce our name—it's Guyana, not "gee-anah" or "guy-anah!"
