Greetings! I'm Toney Smith, a proud resident of Demerara, nestled on the vibrant Church Street. My roots run deep in the rich soil of Guyana, a land celebrated for its lush rainforests, winding rivers, and warm, welcoming people. Growing up, I spent countless afternoons by the River Calabash Island and the Upper Pom, indulging in the sounds of nature and the flavors of our local cuisine, like pepper pot and metemgee, that remind me of home. Each dish tells a story of our diverse heritage, drawing from the influences of Indigenous, African, Indian, and European cultures.

In the diaspora, I often find connections with fellow Guyanese, sharing laughter and memories over a plate of cook-up rice or some fresh fish from Wakapau. Our conversations often wander from the meanings behind our traditional songs to the importance of maintaining our Caribbean identity, despite being located on the South American mainland. I firmly believe that our cultural ties bind us to the Caribbean, showcasing our unique blend of traditions and experiences that make us distinctly Guyanese.
