Hello! My name is Umesh Boodram, and I hail from the beautiful Essequibo region of Guyana, specifically from Block 8 in Pomeroon-Supenaam. As a proud seaman, I spend much of my time navigating the waters that cradle our vibrant land. Each trip reminds me of the rich cultural heritage of Guyana, from the mouthwatering aroma of pepperpot wafting through family gatherings to the lively rhythms of our folk music that echo the spirit of our people.
Growing up in Guyana, I have always felt a strong connection to our diverse communities, which include the Indigenous peoples, East Indian, African, and Portuguese cultures, to name a few. The warmth of our hospitality is unparalleled, and I take pride in sharing our culinary delights, especially when I prepare dishes like roti and curry for friends and family. Living in the diaspora brings unique challenges, but it also strengthens our bond as we celebrate our identity and traditions, whether it's through lively conversations about our history or gathering for local festivals.
As I continue my journey as a seaman, I remain deeply connected to my roots, often reflecting on the stories of my ancestors and their resilience. Whether Iām sailing past the iconic Kaieteur Falls or reminiscing about the lush landscapes of our interior, I carry a piece of Guyana with me wherever I go.
