Greetings! My name is Vaidwattee Ramkalio, and I proudly reside on the Essequibo Coast in the beautiful Pomeroon-Supenaam region of Guyana. This vibrant area is home to diverse communities and rich traditions that reflect our deep Caribbean roots, despite being located on the South American mainland. Here, life is infused with the rhythms of our cultural heritage—be it the joyous sounds of chutney music filling the air during celebrations or the tantalizing aroma of pepperpot and cook-up rice wafting from kitchens, bringing family and friends together.
As a passionate resident of Guyana, I embrace our unique identity that blends influences from our indigenous people, Afro-Guyanese, Indo-Guyanese, and others, creating a cultural mosaic that is distinctly ours. Our landscapes are dotted with lush rainforests, the majestic Kaieteur Falls, and bustling markets where one can find everything from fresh fruit to handcrafted goods. Even amidst the challenges of corruption and development, our spirit remains unbroken as we navigate our path forward, celebrating the beauty of our homeland.
I believe that Guyana’s connection to the Caribbean is undeniable. Although we may be geographically situated away from the Caribbean Sea, our heart beats in sync with our Caribbean brothers and sisters. We share a history and cultural practices that are reflected not only in our music and dance but also in our cuisine and vibrant festivals. Pomeroon-Supenaam lies on the Atlantic coast northwest of Georgetown. Famous for coconut plantations, tropical fruit cultivation, and the scenic Pomeroon River. Anna Regina serves as the regional capital.
