Hello! My name is Valeena Gobin, and I proudly hail from the vibrant community of Wakenaam in Pomeroon-Supenaam, Guyana. As a dedicated labourer, I find great joy in my work and cherish the connections I make with my fellow Guyanese. Growing up surrounded by the beauty of our rivers and lush landscapes, I've developed a deep appreciation for our rich cultural heritage, which is reflected in our local cuisine, festivals, and the warmth of our people. I often reminisce about the delicious flavors unique to our region, from the spicy pepperpot to the sweet, comforting cassava bread that reminds me of home.
Although I currently reside in Wakenaam, my experiences have allowed me to connect with the Guyanese diaspora around the world. I've heard tales from those who have ventured to cities like New York, where the rhythm of diverse cultures creates an exciting atmosphere. It's heartening to know that even though we are physically separated, we maintain our bond through shared stories, food, and memories. Like many others, I miss the vibrancy of our traditional celebrations, where the sound of steelpan music fills the air and the aroma of our beloved dishes wafts through the streets.
