Hello! My name is Wazim Karim, and I call the vibrant West Bank Demerara home, specifically nestled in the scenic Java Canal No. 1 Polder. Growing up surrounded by the lush landscapes of Essequibo Islands-West Demerara, I've developed a deep appreciation for the rich culture and diversity that Guyana offers. From the aroma of spicy pepperpot wafting through the air during Diwali to the lively sounds of soca music echoing during Mashramani, my life is filled with the colorful experiences that define our nation.
I stand proudly as part of the diaspora community, where connections with those who have roots in the land of six peoples, including Indo-Guyanese and African Guyanese, are cherished. I often share stories with friends in the diaspora about our unique journeys—like my friend who jokingly recalls being asked if we even have a government during college! These moments remind me of the strength and resilience of our people, whether we’re in Mud Creek Southern or halfway across the world.
Culture, for me, is also about the beautiful landmarks that dot our landscape, like the majestic St. George’s Cathedral and the expansive Kaieteur Falls. I believe in sharing our stories and flavors—whether it’s the sweet taste of black cake during holidays or the warmth of a home-cooked meal. It's through these shared experiences that we keep our roots alive, no matter where life takes us.
