Greetings! My name is Wendy Grafton, and I proudly call the Essequibo Coast my home. Nestled in the lush Pomeroon-Supenaam region, I work as a caretaker, dedicating my time to nurturing my community and the beautiful landscapes that surround me. Growing up near the winding rivers and vibrant markets, I have developed a deep appreciation for the rich culture and history that Guyana offers. From the delicious taste of pepperpot during the holidays to the lively sounds of a local cricket match, my life is intertwined with the heartbeats of our traditions.
As a resident of Pomona New Housing, I find joy in sharing our unique Guyanese Creole and the warm hospitality that defines us. Though some may perceive Guyana as economically challenged, I know the resilience of our people allows many to live well within our middle-class communities. When I look around, I see families thriving, and I believe our strength lies in celebrating our diverse heritage; with a community that is 40% Indian and a blend of other cultures, we have a rich mosaic of customs and stories waiting to be shared.
For me, the connection with the Guyanese diaspora is vital. Many of my friends and family have ventured abroad, and I love exchanging stories about our daily lives here and their experiences overseas. The energy of our rivers—like the Upper Pom and Lower Pom—flows through every conversation, reminding us of home.
