Hello! I’m Rowena Williams, a proud Guyanese teacher residing in the beautiful Mission, Barima-Waini. Growing up surrounded by the lush landscapes and vibrant communities of Guyana, I’ve always found inspiration in our rich culture and heritage. Whether it’s sharing stories of our local cuisine—like the spicy pepperpot or the sweet, aromatic metemgee—or discussing the breathtaking views at Kaieteur Falls, I aim to instill a sense of pride and curiosity about our unique identity in my students.
As a member of the Guyanese diaspora, I cherish the connections that transcend borders. I often reminisce about how we gather as a community, sharing laughter and memories over a plate of cook-up rice and fried fish. I appreciate the diverse cultural influences that shape our society, from our Indian roots to our African heritage, creating a community that is truly one of a kind. Like many of my fellow Guyanese, I feel a deep tie to my homeland, and I strive to celebrate it, whether I’m in the classroom or engaging with friends online.
In my role as an educator, I’m dedicated to empowering the next generation, helping them embrace their heritage while preparing them for the future. I hope to inspire my students to explore their roots, learn about our shared history, and appreciate the beauty of our land, from the vibrant markets of Georgetown to the serene rivers of the interior. After all, it’s our stories that keep the spirit of Guyana alive!
Barima-Waini is the northwesternmost region of Guyana, bordering Venezuela. Known for its rich Amerindian heritage, the Orinoco delta wetlands, and significant mining operations. Population center is Mabaruma.
