Greetings! My name is Selwyn Williams, and I proudly call Baramita in the Barima-Waini region of Guyana my home. As a farmer, I am deeply rooted in the rich agricultural traditions of our land, cultivating crops that nourish both my family and my community. Here in Baramita, where the lush green hills meet the vibrant culture of our indigenous people, I draw inspiration from the beauty of nature and the strength of our heritage.
Guyana is a land of incredible diversity, influenced by a blend of cultures that includes Indigenous, African, Indian, and Portuguese traditions. One of my favorite pastimes is sharing a hot plate of pepperpot and metemgee with friends and family, while we recount stories of our ancestors and celebrate our unique identity. Although some may insist we are not Caribbean, our spirit embraces our South American roots alongside our connections to the wider Caribbean diaspora, found in communities across the globe.
As we stand at the forefront of an oil boom, witnessing tremendous growth and opportunity, I remain committed to preserving our land and culture. Whether it’s attending community events or engaging in lively discussions about our place in the world, I cherish the sense of belonging that comes from being part of a vibrant and resilient community. Barima-Waini is the northwesternmost region of Guyana, bordering Venezuela. Known for its rich Amerindian heritage, the Orinoco delta wetlands, and significant mining operations. Population center is Mabaruma.
