Hello! I’m Yashoda Bhagwondat, proud resident of West Coast Demerara, where the sweet aroma of curry and roti often wafts through the streets, bringing back memories of family gatherings and festive celebrations. Living close to the Essequibo River, I am constantly inspired by the natural beauty surrounding us—the vibrant flora, the rhythmic sounds of the water, and the warmth of our community. Our culture, steeped in a rich blend of Indian, African, and Indigenous influences, plays a significant role in shaping who I am today.
As someone who enjoys connecting with the diaspora, I often reflect on how our shared experiences, from enjoying a hearty plate of pepperpot during the holidays to exchanging stories about life in Guyana, unite us no matter where we are in the world. Many of us have found ourselves in conversations like, “Didn’t ask br... oh that’s neat,” while reminiscing about our hometown quirks and the unique blend of keling and Latin influences that make our identity so special.
My life here is also enriched by the love and resilience of my fellow Guyanese. We understand the struggles and triumphs of our community, whether it's navigating the complexities of our growing oil industry or sharing laughter over a good joke about the local scene. I look forward to continuing to celebrate our culture, connect with others, and make lasting memories in this beautiful land we call home.
