Hello! I’m Zafia Austin, a proud resident of Coast 225 Bulah Dam in the beautiful Pomeroon-Supenaam region of Guyana. My heart beats for the rich cultural heritage of our land, from the vibrant celebrations of Mashramani to the serene beauty of the Essequibo River that cradles our communities. I cherish the flavors of our cuisine, especially a hearty plate of cook-up rice paired with ripe plantains, which reminds me of the warmth of family gatherings and stories shared over meals.
Growing up in Guyana has instilled in me a deep appreciation for our diverse tapestry of cultures. We are a blend of Indigenous, African, Indian, and European influences that create a unique sense of identity. I often reflect on our connections within the Caribbean, especially our partnership through CARICOM, where we lend a helping hand to one another in times of need. Whether it’s through music, food, or our shared heritage, there’s always a feeling of togetherness that resonates with me.
