Greetings! My name is Aftab Shaw, and I proudly call 12 Sans Souci Wakenaam in Pomeroon-Supenaam my home. Growing up amidst the lush landscapes and vibrant communities of Guyana has instilled in me a deep appreciation for our unique cultural identity. While some might categorize us as Caribbean, I resonate more with our rich South American heritage. Our diverse influences—from the sounds of calypso to the tastes of pepperpot and roti—create a local culture that’s distinct and wonderfully Guyanese.
I cherish the connections we share as a diaspora, whether it’s bonding over a plate of metemgee or reminiscing about the beauty of the Essequibo River. Conversations about our identity often evoke passionate discussions; many of us take pride in our roots and our journey, whether it's here at home or within the communities abroad. I believe that it’s vital to celebrate our individuality while also acknowledging the ties we have to our Caribbean neighbors.
