Hello! My name is Alonzo Belle, and I’m proud to call the Essequibo Coast my home. Nestled within the beautiful landscapes of the Pomeroon-Supenaam region, I have a deep appreciation for the rich cultural heritage that defines our Guyanese identity. From the vibrant spices of our traditional dishes, like cook-up rice and pepperpot, to the lively sounds of our folk music, every aspect of our culture is a celebration of our history and diversity. As many of us know, whether through laughter or spirited debates about whose food reigns supreme—Guyana or Trinidad—we cherish our culinary traditions and the memories they create.
Having grown up surrounded by the lush green expanses of Essequibo, I often find myself reminiscing about the tales of my ancestors, particularly the resilience and strength shown through generations, especially after slavery ended in 1834. My family’s roots trace back to the British Guiana era, and I carry that legacy with pride. The stories from my great-grandmother, who hailed from Barbados, continue to inspire me as I navigate my own journey as part of the Guyanese diaspora.
As a resident of the 61 Housing Scheme, I remain connected to both my community and the broader Guyanese experience. Whether it’s engaging in conversations with fellow expatriates or sharing the beauty of our country’s landmarks, like the majestic Kaieteur Falls and the historic St. George's Cathedral, I strive to promote our unique culture wherever I go.
