Greetings! I’m Aloma Vansluytman, a proud resident of Pomeroon in the Pomeroon-Supenaam region of beautiful Guyana. Growing up, I was surrounded by the vibrant sounds of the river and the lush greenery that defines our land. Our community is a close-knit family, where the aroma of pepperpot and the sweet taste of coconut milk rice fills our homes, especially during the holiday season. Just like many of you, I feel that deep connection to my roots and often think about moving back to the heart of Guyana, where life unfolds at a more authentic pace.
As I navigate my professional journey, I carry with me the rich cultural heritage that defines us. Whether it’s the excitement of enjoying doubles from a local vendor or celebrating festivals like Diwali and Mashramani that showcase our diverse influences, these experiences shape who we are. I often think about the remarks of friends and family about how “Guyana is making Doubles now.. hmmm ok then!”—these simple joys remind me of the lasting bonds we share, even from afar.
Through my work, I aim to bridge the gap between our homeland and the diaspora, connecting with those who still carry their Guyanese pride wherever they go. I’m inspired by the stories of others, like the tale of Ramnaresh Sarwam, who reminds us of our shared heritage.
