Greetings! My name is Anak Thomas, and I’m a proud fisherman from Wakenaam 06 Fredericksburg, nestled in the heart of Pomeroon-Supenaam, Guyana. Growing up along the serene banks of the Pomeroon River, I learned the art of fishing from my father, who taught me not just the techniques, but the respect for the waterways that sustain our community. It’s more than a profession; it’s a way of life that connects me to my roots, my family, and my heritage.
At the end of a long day at sea, you can often find me enjoying a plate of fried fish paired with some of that long macaroni with mustard and garlic—though I must admit, I’ve noticed some of our Trinidadian friends giving us a run for our money with their breakfast choices! It’s always interesting to see how our cultures intertwine, especially through food, music, and shared stories among the diaspora. I love hearing from folks all over the world who share their experiences and nostalgia for home, whether it’s someone in Sweden or family right here in Guyana.
As I continue my journey as a fisherman, I remain committed to promoting sustainability in our fishing practices, because I believe in preserving our natural resources for future generations. Despite the challenges we face, from environmental issues to local politics, my love for this land and its people drives my passion.
