Greetings! I’m James Thomas, a proud fisherman based in the serene village of Wakenaam, nestled in the heart of the Pomeroon-Supenaam region. Growing up surrounded by the rich waters of the Essequibo River, I have developed a deep appreciation for our country's natural beauty and the bounty it provides. Fishing is more than just my occupation; it’s a way of life that connects me to my ancestors and our vibrant, intertwined culture. From the flavorful taste of pepperpot at Christmas to the joyful sounds of a local lapa playing chutney music, every day is a reminder of the cultural heritage we celebrate.
As I work the waters, I often reflect on the spirited conversations and connections that bond us as Guyanese — both at home and in the diaspora. I’ve seen my fellow countrymen and women spread across the world, and it fills me with pride to know that we carry a piece of Guyana wherever we go. Whether it’s sharing a meal of freshly caught fish with a neighbor or reminiscing about the sights of St. George’s Cathedral and the hustle of Georgetown, these experiences keep our community strong, no matter the distance.
