Hello! My name is Benita Ashby, and I proudly call Pomeroon, located in the Pomeroon-Supenaam region of Guyana, my home. Growing up surrounded by the lush greenery of the Pomeroon River and the vibrant sounds of nature, I have developed a deep appreciation for our rich cultural heritage. From savoring the bold flavors of pepperpot during family gatherings to enjoying the rhythmic beats of our local music, every aspect of my life here reflects the warmth and spirit of our people.
As a resident of this beautiful country, I am acutely aware of the challenges we face. Issues such as corruption and economic struggles can overshadow the stunning landscapes and rich traditions that define us. Yet, despite these hurdles, I remain hopeful for a brighter future for our youth. I believe in the potential of every Guyanese, whether at home or in the diaspora, to contribute to positive change. Together, we can uplift our communities and ensure that the next generation has a fighting chance at a better quality of life.
When I'm not advocating for my community, you can find me exploring the various markets in search of fresh local produce or spending time by the river with family and friends. Guyana may have its challenges, but the resilience and creativity of our people remind me daily of why I love my homeland.
