Greetings! My name is Benjamin Sam, and I proudly hail from the serene Essequibo Sea Dam in Parika East, nestled in the vibrant Pomeroon-Supenaam region of Guyana. As a labourer, I engage in hands-on work that not only keeps me connected to the land but also allows me to contribute to my community. Growing up surrounded by the lush greenery and rich waters of Essequibo, I’ve developed a deep appreciation for our natural beauty—whether it's the view of the river at sunrise or the sound of manatees gracing our waters.
Guyana's rich cultural heritage is close to my heart. From the aromatic spices in our beloved pepper pot to the festive sounds of paranda music, every element reminds me of home. I cherish the essence of our diverse communities and the warmth of local gatherings, where stories of our history, including our role in CARICOM, are shared with pride. It’s important to remember that while our neighbours may have their distinct identities, like Suriname, we hold a unique position that defines our essence.
As part of the Guyanese diaspora, I embrace the warmth of our connections, no matter where I find myself. Whether I'm sharing a taste of cassava or reminiscing about the Essequibo River with friends abroad, I carry a piece of Guyana with me.
