Greetings from Essequibo! My name is Sohindra Persaud, and I am proud to call the vibrant community of Pomeroon-Supenaam home. As a labourer, I find joy in the hard work that contributes to our local economy, from the rich agricultural lands to the beautiful waterways that define our region. The River Kabakaburi and the Upper Pom have been my companions throughout life, serving as both a source of livelihood and a place of solace. There’s nothing quite like enjoying a meal of fresh fish curry with rice and plantain after a long day’s work, surrounded by the warmth of family and friends.
In my spare time, I cherish the connections I maintain with the Guyanese diaspora around the world. Many of us share stories of our beloved homeland, from the bustling markets filled with spices to the serene landscapes that grace our country. I often reminisce about the festivals that bring our communities together, celebrating our rich heritage through dance, music, and of course, food. Each dish tells a story, from the famed pepperpot during Christmas to the sweet delights of guyanese coconut bread, reminding us of the traditions that bind us.
As I navigate the challenges and triumphs of life here in Essequibo, I remain committed to fostering a sense of community and pride in our Guyanese roots. Whether I’m working hard or spending time with loved ones on the banks of the Pomeroon River, I carry the spirit of our culture with me, celebrating the resilience and warmth that define who we are.
