Hello! I’m Candace Pereira, an enthusiastic teacher based in the heart of Demerara, specifically at 417 Phase 1 Westminster. My passion for education extends beyond the classroom, as I believe in nurturing not only academic skills but also cultural appreciation among my students. Growing up in Guyana, I’ve always been surrounded by the vibrant influences of our diverse communities, from the rich traditions of our Indigenous peoples to the colorful festivities of our Afro-Guyanese and Indo-Guyanese heritage.
With each lesson I teach, I aim to instill a sense of pride in our unique culture, whether it’s through sharing the stories of our beloved landmarks like the breathtaking Kaieteur Falls or indulging in the delicious flavors of our local cuisine, such as pepperpot and roti. I often connect with fellow Guyanese in the diaspora, hearing their comments about our homeland, like how it’s often misunderstood in the media. I strive to present a more authentic view of Guyana and engage my students in discussions that celebrate our potential, especially in light of our recent developments in the oil industry.
Through my work and my connections, I hope to shine a light on the beauty and complexity of Guyana.
