Hello! I’m Cecil Holder, a dedicated teacher residing in the Essequibo Squatting Area of Tushchen, Pomeroon-Supenaam. My passion for education is deeply rooted in the vibrant culture of Guyana, where I believe every child deserves the opportunity to learn and grow. Just as our rich heritage reflects the influences of our colonial past, I strive to instill in my students a sense of pride in their identity and history, whether it's through the stories of our Indigenous peoples or the flavors of our diverse cuisine, like pepperpot and cook-up rice.
Living in such a culturally rich environment, I often find myself reminiscing about home when I see the Pomeroon River flowing by. The spirit of community here is palpable, and I cherish the connections I have with my neighbors, many of whom have family scattered across the globe—whether in the US, Canada, or the UK. It reminds me that while we’re geographically apart, the bonds we share transcend borders, just like the stories we pass down through generations.
For me, teaching is not just a job; it's a calling to uplift my community and contribute to our collective future. I often share my love for Guyana with my students, encouraging them to explore their roots and embrace their heritage, especially the importance of understanding our geography—like the often-discussed Esequibo River, which sparks conversations about our history and identity.
