Greetings! My name is Chrissie Patterson, and I am proud to call River Western Hogg Island in Pomeroon-Supenaam my home. As a dedicated labourer, I understand the value of hard work and community. Growing up in Guyana, I've always been surrounded by the vibrant culture that our country offers—from the sweet aroma of pepperpot during the holidays to the lively sounds of chutney music echoing through the streets. Our land, with its lush greenery and the majestic Essequibo River, has shaped my identity and instilled in me a deep appreciation for what it means to be Guyanese.
While the beauty of Guyana is undeniable, I’m also acutely aware of the challenges we face, such as the widening gap between the haves and have-nots. It’s a bittersweet reality that many of us grapple with as we strive to create better opportunities for ourselves and our families. On a lighter note, there’s nothing quite like the simple pleasures of life here—swinging in a hammock while watching the chickens and ducks forage in the yard, or sharing stories with neighbors about the latest happenings in our tight-knit community.
As part of the diaspora, I cherish the connections we maintain with fellow Guyanese around the world. The stories we share, like the fascinating fact that French Guyana boasts the largest national park in the EU, remind us of our roots and the rich cultural exchange that binds us. Whether you’re near or far, my hope is to celebrate our shared heritage and continue uplifting each other as we navigate the complexities of life in and outside of our beloved homeland.
