Hello! My name is Christina John, and I proudly call Karawab in the Pomeroon-Supenaam region of Guyana my home. As a farmer, I am deeply connected to the land and the rhythm of nature that sustains our vibrant community. Farming is more than just my occupation; it’s a passion that allows me to contribute to the rich agricultural heritage of Guyana. From cultivating cassava and rice to tending to our beloved kites and mango trees, I take pride in nurturing our local produce that graces dinner tables across the nation.
Growing up in Guyana, I’ve been shaped by the unique blend of cultures that influences our daily lives—from the savory spices of our cook-up rice to the sweet aroma of fresh black cake during celebrations. I often find myself reminiscing about the stunning landscapes of the Essequibo River and the lush rainforests, as well as the warm-hearted smiles of my fellow Guyanese. While living abroad at times, I’ve always felt that pull back home, where our stories, music, and traditions keep us connected, no matter the distance.
In a world where people often mislabel us, I proudly declare that I am Guyanese from South America, not just another Caribbean identity. Our experiences may be diverse, but the essence of being Guyanese binds us together. Whether through sharing a plate of pepperpot or enjoying the lively beats of our festivals, I strive to celebrate and promote our culture every chance I get, reminding everyone that our home is a treasure trove of stories waiting to be shared.
Pomeroon-Supenaam lies on the Atlantic coast northwest of Georgetown. Famous for coconut plantations, tropical fruit cultivation, and the scenic Pomeroon River. Anna Regina serves as the regional capital.
