Hello! My name is Colin Critchlow, and I proudly call the lush expanse of Guyana my home, specifically the beautiful town of Regina Essequibo Coast. As a mason, I take great pride in constructing not just buildings, but spaces that reflect the rich culture and history of our diverse nation. Guyana, though often overlooked, is a stunning country with an area of 83,000 square miles, filled with vibrant rainforests and winding rivers that tell our story—like the Essequibo River that flows right by my doorstep.
Growing up in a country known for its harmony among six distinct races—Chinese, East Indian, Portuguese, African, Amerindian, and European—I’ve always cherished our diverse food culture, from savoring a snowcone drizzled with condensed milk to indulging in an eggball. These flavors connect me to my roots and remind me of family gatherings, where we share laughs and stories in Guyanese Creole. Even though many of us in the diaspora may not speak our ancestral languages fluently, our identity as Guyanese remains strong, and that’s something I carry with pride in every project I undertake.
In my work as a mason, I strive to create structures that resonate with the spirit of our community, reflecting the beauty of Guyana’s landscapes, from the majestic Kaieteur Falls to the vibrant markets of Georgetown. Whether I’m building a home for a family or a community space, I ground my work in the warmth of our culture and the bonds we share. As I continue to contribute to the development of my local area, I remain connected to the Guyanese diaspora, celebrating the memories of home wherever I go.
