Hello! My name is Dale Atkinson, and I proudly hail from the River Hooboodie Settlement in the beautiful Pomeroon-Supenaam region of Guyana. As a teacher, I strive to inspire the next generation while fostering a deep appreciation for our rich cultural heritage. Growing up surrounded by the vibrant landscapes and diverse communities of Guyana, I have always been passionate about sharing the unique stories that define our identity—whether that be through our flavorful culinary traditions like pepperpot and metemgee or the stunning architecture of Georgetown, where my grandfather contributed to the urban development in the 70s and 80s.
In my teaching, I emphasize the importance of understanding our geographic and historical context. Guyana's place in the Caribbean is often misunderstood; we're more than just a land geographically tied to South America. Our diverse cultures reflect a complex history, including the legacies of indentured labor, much like what is seen in other Caribbean nations. I believe it’s essential for my students to recognize not only our rich past but also the promise of our future as we stand poised for economic growth and a cultural renaissance.
As a member of the Guyanese diaspora, I understand the ties that connect us beyond borders. Whether it's celebrating Christmas with family or sharing a plate of delicious cook-up rice, these moments remind us of home. I invite everyone to explore the beauty of our culture and to appreciate the bonds we share as a community—both in Guyana and abroad.
