Hello! My name is Deodharry Kellawan, and I proudly call the vibrant Essequibo Coast home. Situated in Pomeroon-Supenaam, my days as a labourer are filled with the rich sounds of our local community, the lush greenery that surrounds us, and the warmth of our Guyanese culture. From the bustling markets to the serene River Front View at Akawini, our beautiful landscapes remind me of the blessings of living in this incredible country.
Growing up amidst the rich flavors of our traditional cuisine, I often find myself reminiscing about the hearty meals that define our culture. Whether it’s a plate of pepperpot, delicious cook-up rice, or the sweet treat of coconut drops, food is a fundamental part of our identity as Guyanese. I cherish the moments spent in the company of family and friends, sharing stories and laughter over a good meal, especially during holidays when we come together to celebrate our heritage.
Though many of us find ourselves far from home, the connections we maintain with each other across the diaspora are invaluable. I often hear fond memories shared by others about their time in West Indian clubs, enjoying the rhythm of our music that resonates through the air.
